ANUGA 2007 - Thailand to be First Partner Country

ANUGA 2007"Kitchen of the World". This is Thailand’s slogan at the ANUGA, the world's most important trade fair on food & beverages. Thailand will be the first partner country ever. The Thai-German Programme for Enterprise Competitiveness will support with business-to-business contacts and the promotion of organic food. In addition, GTZ will also help in organizing study tours on organic market development for Thai key players, both from public and private sector. The joint booth with the Department of Foreign Trade, the Office of the Permanent Secretary and the Ministry of Commerce will be in the Thai Pavilion.

Cooperation for Organic Agri-Business

Oragnic CooperationAn MoU between GTZ, Maejo University, Earth Safe Foundation, Organic Agriculture Certification Thailand (ACT) and the Thai Organic Trade Association (TOTA) is under preparation. Its objectives are to promote and strengthen organic agriculture and organic product development, to facilitate production processes that meet standards and to increase awareness and appreciation of organic products in both domestic and international markets.

5th Eco-Efficiency Forum
Organic Industry Thailand - Tradition and Innovation.

Eco-Efficiency Forum No 5H.E. Rungruang Isarangkura, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, and Dr. Michael Banzhaf, Deputy Head of Mission, German Embassy, gave the keynotes to the 5th Eco-Efficiency Forum on "Organic Agri-business" reflecting sustainable economic development, environmentally friendly production, energy efficiency and innovations for eco-efficient value chains. Policy Instruments for Resource Efficiency

Chemicals Risk Management by GTZ Policy makers around the world have started activities to reduce resource use while at the same time increasing economic and social well-being, a vision that relates to the notion of 'sustainable consumption and production'. A range of diverse instruments is already applied to further these goals. With this hands-on guidance GTZ, the UNEP/Wuppertal Institute Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, aims to provide an overview of selected policy instruments for boosting resource efficiency. It builds on the recent discussions and practical experiences both from developed and developing countries.

Organic Products from Thailand at the Biofach 2007

Promotion of organic products and sustainable value chains are main fields of the Thai-German Programme for Enterprise Competitiveness. The main aim is to achieve higher market share through international certified (e.g. Naturland, IFOAM) organic products. Participation in the world's largest fair for organic products, in the BioFach, is one of the activities of the programme to establish business relationships between producers, processors and their international clients and partners. Special attention at the Biofach is given to: longan, shrimp, saa-paper and bio-plastics.

Saa-Paper from Northern Thailand on the Paperworld 2007

GTZ Bangkok facilitated the Thai saa-paper industry to present and promote its environmentally friendly products at this year's Paperworld in Frankfurt. In addition to the fair and business meetings, the visits to paper related organizations and institutions have been organized. The delegation includes four saa-paper producers. Cooperation partners are the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (DEQP), Industrial Promotion Centre Northern Thailand (IPC1), Department of Export Promotion (DEP) and others.

Memorandum of Understanding:
Bangpoo Emergency Mutual Aid Group (BEMAG)
Tuesday, 19 December 2006, Windsor Hotel, Bangkok

Under the facilitation of the Chemicals Risk Management Project the Bangpoo Emergency Mutual Aid Group (BEMAG) has agreed to assist each other in emergency cases, prevention measures as well as conducting regularly emergency drills with the Bangpoo Industrial Estate Emergency Response Center. After the project ends, the BEMAG will continue part of the project activities - showing clearly that the private sectors are recognizing the importance of risk management, and that they take the issue very seriously. 4th Eco-Efficiency Forum:
Eco-Efficient Agro-Industry and Sufficiency Economy: A Profitable Environment for SME.

The discussion about a "sufficiency economy" is gaining increasing attention in the Thai society. Also the Thai interim government expressed its willingness to pursue economic policies, combining the free market with the principles of sufficiency. Stimulating eco-efficiency for agro-industry and promoting of organic agricultural products addresses not only to each individual enterprise, but also to areas, estates, zones or regional clusters, which sustainably shall offer natural resources and are compatible to environmental conditions.

Promotion of Thai Marine Shrimp:
Germany satisfied with Quality

Dr. Charalthada Karnasutra, Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, announced that, following cooperation between the Department of Fisheries and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the Department of Fisheries had invited Dr. Claus Gehlhaar, Director of the Bureau of Imported Goods Inspection in Bremen, one of Germany’s important customs checkpoints, to visit the shrimp production systems of private farms and shrimp inspection and quality assurance sections in the government sector. The visits were satisfactory and led to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) relating to Thai shrimp quality inspection between Dr. Somying Piumsombun, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Fisheries and Dr. Claus Gehlhaa, Director of the Bureau of Imported Goods Inspection in Bremen, Germany. The signing of the MoU will result in cooperation over goods inspection that will benefit Thai shrimp exporters. Within the framework of the Thai-German Programme for Enterprise Competitiveness three Delegations will visit various institutions, places and events in the above mentioned matters. The delegations consist of high-ranking Thai officials from various departments and ministries. Furthermore, a delegation of Thai companies will visit various German companies for cooperation in the field of biomass and biofuel, which is partly sponsored by the German Office for Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Economics and Technology.

Memorandum of Understanding:
Thai-German Cooperation on Bioplastics

Signing MoU on Bioplastics between GTZ, NIA and TBS

On the occasion of the opening of the international conference and exhibition InnoBioPlast 2006 (21-24 September 2006) at Siam Paragon, Bangkok, a MoU - Memorandum of Understanding between the National Innovation Agency (NIA) - under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the Thai Bioplastics Society (TBS) and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) has been signed for a cooperation to promote bioplastics in Thailand.
The project will cover the following areas:

  1. National Road Map - National strategy for bioplastics development.
  2. Development of Innovative and Appropriate Technology.
  3. Market Development for Thai bioplastics.



Starting this year, the duration of this cooperation project shall be about two years.
